Khuzestan District

An Overview of Khuzestan District

After the discovery of oil fields in Masjed Soleiman, the first pipeline was installed in 1910 in order to transport crude oil to Abadan Oil Refinery.

With the development of Oil Industry, the   pipelines were extended. In 1956, the first trans- Iranian pipeline (500 km) was established which connected Ahwaz to Azna. A year later, it was extended to Ray. In order to move petroleum products several pump stations were established on the pipeline route which required an establishment to maintain the pipelines and pump stations. Thus, in 1956 the first pipeline District in Iran was set up in Ahwaz. The operational zone of this District extends to a vast part of Khuzestan province, forming a cone with Abadan to Mahshahr at the base, and Zal Bridge and Lorestan District at the top.

There are 10 Pump Stations and Oil Transport Installations in this District, in addition to Abadan District. The following Pump Stations and installations are there in Khuzestan District:

  1. Abadan, Seyedi Pump Station
  2. Khordoragh Pump Station
  3. Mayel 40 Pump Station
  4. Shahid Lorestany Pump Station
  5. Shahid Chamran Pump Station
  6. Nezameyeh Installations and Pump Station
  7. Abdul Khan Pump Station
  8. Shahid Zangeneh Pump Station  (Sabz Abb)
  9. Andimeshk Oil Transport Installations
  10. Bidrooyeh Pump Station

Pipelines Stability

The pipelines and installations in Khuzestan District have undergone various damages due to Imposed War, weathering, and long life of the pipes. They have been or are being reconstructed and renovated by hardworking specialists. Up to now, most of the pipelines have been strengthened, replaced, or are being replaced, and it is hoped that with the establishment of the remaining pipelines, there will be   safe and stable condition in the whole District.

Khuzestan Pipelines Length

The 1039 km pipelines for transporting oil products includes pipes of different diameters such as 6", 10", 12", 16", 20" and 26" pipes. The length of the pipelines for moving crude oil is 564 km, which include 12", 16", 26", and 30" pipes.

Telecommunication

The vast District of Khuzestan together with the significant number of Pump Stations   requires an extensive network of telecommunication installations and facilities. Khuzestan District enjoys 23 Microwave Telecommunication Stations, radio digital, fiber optic network, as well as local telephone stations and VHS mobile systems. The Telecommunication division is in charge of ensuring industry wide communication as well as continuous industrial telecommunication, local, audio, sound, video, and data communications for companies such as South Oil Fields, Petrochemical Co., Mahshahar Special Economic Zone, Central Oil Fields, and other affiliated companies.

Gas Turbines

At present, all Pump Stations and turbines run on gas, except Shahid Lorestany Pump Station where work is underway to supply gas for this station soon.

Pipelines Maintenance

Along with the critical task of material and refined petroleum products transport, the most important priority of the District is to maintain and protect the pipelines.

In this respect, Engineering Department for metal corrosion in Khuzestan District, taking advantage of 46 Cathodic Protection Stations, endeavors to determine what corrosion control measures will be required. Corrosion engineers fight internal and external corrosion and ensure safe conditions and increased efficiencies for transporting refined products. To this end, the most common anti-corrosion treatments are employed, including, among others:  C-scan, recoating, painting, the application of enamel , pigging or pig running, anodic protection, and corrosion monitoring test stations.

International Certificates Awarded

Following the measures taken to implement, and maintain quality management systems and continually improve its effectiveness, Khuzestan District has been awarded the ISO 9002 certification for Quality Management System. Further awards include ISO 14001:2004 Certificate for Environmental Management system, the OHSAS 18001:2007 Certificate for successfully implementing the Health and Safety Management System in the workplace, and I.M.S Certificate for implementing Integrated Management System. Presently, the company is trying to adopt EFQM Excellence Model.

Crew size

There are more than 460 permanent and 400 temporary or contract employees working in this District.

Khordorgh Pump Station

Khordoragh Pump Station is located on Abadan-Mahshahr Rd., along Shadegan spectacular wetland. The Station is named after the nearby Khore (Bay).

Khordoragh is located 50 km from Abadan to Mahshahr. The Station receives petroleum from Abadan Refinery through a set of 26" pipeline and moves it to Mahshahr for export or other usage.

The importance of Khordoragh station lies in the fact that in the process of refining crude oil in Abadan Refinery various products are produced.  These products are of high importance due to their density and composition. In this process what remains, as residue in distillation tower is mazot? Its amount varies according to the purity of the crude oil. On time exit of mazot and its transport to storage tanks, and then   to consumers is very important.

Any failure in the process of transporting mazot would entail the operation shut down, which affects Abadan Refinery as well. Khordoragh station is charged with the important task of transporting mazot to Mahshahr export port in the best possible way.

It should be mentioned that crude oil transport operation is carried out by three Solar Saturn Turbines, 1200 horsepower each.

In case of a power surge, there are two Generators, 377 horsepower, installed to provide emergency power.

Crew size

▪       26 employees work here in the station.

Pump Station Elevation

▪       The Khordoragh Pump Station is located at an altitude of 1.5 m above the sea level.

Shahid Lorestany Pump Station

Shahid Lorestany Pump Station is located 30km from Ahwaz, along Abadan main road, neighboring the vast area of lush green sugar cane fields. It was know as Nahid Pump Station in the past.

Shahid Lorestany Pump Station is responsible for receiving and transporting the refined products from Abadan Refinery, as well as receiving and transporting imported products. As the only pump station between Abadan-Ahwaz, this Station has a distinguished position.

Products produced at refinery are transported to Seyedi Station and from there they are moved to Shahid Lorestany Pump Station though 16" pipelines. The received products are then pumped towards Nezameyeh Pump Station, using two powerful turbine engines. In addition, a 12" pipeline, which passes through this Station, carries the refined products directly from Abadan Refinery to Ahwaz city.

Shahid Lorestany Pump Station is equipped with two Solar Turbines, 4000 and 4500 horsepower each with the total transport capacity of 120,000 barrel per 24 hours.

Mayel 40 Pump Station

The last pump station in the southern part of Khuzestan District is known as Mayel 40, which is located   5 km northwest of Mahshahr County. The Station is charged with various tasks, each of which can underline the critical task of the Station in transporting products and feeding   Abadan Refinery, the oldest refinery in the Middle East.
